As the opioid crisis continues to evolve, Save Our Families is committed to keeping our community informed about emerging substances contributing to fatal overdoses. On December 3, 2024, the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) issued a public alert about ortho-methylfentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid appearing in North America.
What is Ortho-Methylfentanyl?
Ortho-methylfentanyl (oMF) is a synthetic opioid and active mu-opioid receptor agonist with a potency comparable to fentanyl. This drug, similar in structure to fentanyl and other analogues like para-fluorofentanyl, produces effects such as:
- Analgesia (pain relief)
- Sedation
- Euphoria
- Unfortunately, like fentanyl, it can also cause respiratory depression and death in severe intoxication cases.
How is Ortho-Methylfentanyl Spreading?
According to the CFSRE report, ortho-methylfentanyl first appeared in early 2023 in British Columbia, Canada, and has since been confirmed in over 200 forensic cases across Canada and the United States. It is often found in combination with fentanyl and para-fluorofentanyl, making it even more dangerous for unsuspecting users.
The drug has been detected in the following U.S. states:
- California
- Arizona
- Massachusetts
- Pennsylvania, Florida, and West Virginia (cases pending)
In Canada, the majority of cases have been reported in British Columbia, with additional cases in Manitoba, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island.
Why This Matters
The presence of ortho-methylfentanyl in the recreational drug supply significantly increases the risks of overdose and fatality. Its detection alongside other opioids highlights the growing complexity of the overdose crisis and the importance of harm reduction efforts.
How You Can Help
At Save Our Families, we are dedicated to harm reduction strategies, including distributing naloxone, providing education about synthetic opioids, and supporting families affected by overdose. Together, we can combat this crisis by:
- Staying informed about emerging threats like ortho-methylfentanyl.
- Advocating for expanded access to harm reduction resources.
- Supporting Our Mission through donating and volunteering.
